Characterization of typical and atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains of the classical O55 serogroup by RAPD analysis Rev. Microbiol.

The genetic diversity of 41 typical and atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains of the serogroup O55 was analyzed by using the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method. All typical EPEC O55 strains were grouped in two clusters (A and C) and belonged to the serotype O55:H6, while cluster B included all atypical strains, which were of the serotype O55:H7. The three groups also included non-motile strains. RAPD may be a useful method for epidemiological studies on E. coli O55 infection.

Escherichia coli in Chicken Carcasses in Southern Brazil: Absence of Shigatoxigenic (STEC) and Isolation of Atypical Enteropathogenic (aEPEC) Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (aEPEC) in frozen chicken carcasses sold at stores in southern Brazil. Typical E. coli colonies were enumerated in 246 chicken carcasses, and the presence of stx1, stx2, eae genes was investigated in their rinse liquid and in E. coli strains isolated from those carcasses. Strains of E. coli were also investigated for the presence of bfp gene. A median of 0.6 cfu.g-1(ranging from <0.1 to 242.7 cfu.g-1) of typical E. coli colonies was found in the carcasses. The contamination of coastal areas by potentially pathogenic enteric bacteria is of concern for the sustainability of some uses, such as shellfish farming, recreational shellfish harvesting and bathing. The contamination of these environments may occur through the land-spreading of livestock wastes, animal feces deposited on pastures, wastewaters from slaughterhouses or from municipal wastewater treatment plants. The presence of these bacteria in coastal environment may present a potential risk to human health. Molecular identification of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) associated with infant diarrhea in Londrina, Parana, Brazil BJM

In this work, the prevalence of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) in children in Londrina-PR, Brazil, was evaluated by means of digoxigenin-labelled DNA probes which identify the plasmid responsible for EPEC adherence factor (EAF), and virulence genes for EPEC as bundle-forming pilus (bfp) and E. coli attaching-effacing factor (eae). In addition, the isolated strains were serotyped and tested for adherence to HEp-2 cells. From 102 children with diarrhoea, 19 strains hybridized with at least one probe, and eleven of them were identified as typical EPEC because they hybridized with the three probes used, showed a localized adherence (LA) pattern, and presented no genes for enterotoxins (ST and LT) or invasion as detected by PCR. Polyclonal anti-intimin antibody: immunological characterization and its use in EPEC and EHEC diagnosis BJM

Intimins are outer membrane proteins expressed by enteric bacterial pathogens capable of inducing intestinal attachment-and-effacement lesion (A/E). Through immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, flow citometry and immunogold we observed that the obtained polyclonal antibody against conserved intimin region recognizes the different intimin subtypes and suggests that it can be used as a tool for EPEC and EHEC detection. Besides, immuno-dot assay seems to be a possible alternative as a capture method.

Prevalence of enteropathogenic and enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli in foods of animal origin in southern Brazil Ciência Rural

Prevalence of Escherichia coli in foods of animal origin from the city of Pelotas, Brazil, was determined. The ocurrence of enterotoxigenic (ETEC) and classic enteropathogenic (EPEC) serogroups among E. coli isolates was determined. E. coli was isolated from 68% of the food samples surveyed. Of 36 food samples tested, 11(30%) and 24(66%) were positive for EPEC and ETEC strains respectively. However, of 187 E. coli isolates tested, 30(16%) were EPEC compared to 75(40%) which were ETEC. The antibiotic resistance pattern revealed that the isolates were highly sensitive to all antibiotics tested.

Prevalence of Shiga Toxin-Producing and Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli in Wild and Pet Birds in Iran Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) strains and to identify the stx gene types in wild captive and companion birds. In total,657 E. coli isolates from 219 birds belonging to 38 different species were investigated for the presence of STEC and EPEC strains. It was shown that five birds (2.28%) carried strains positive for one or more of the virulence factors investigated. The results indicated that 1.8% (n=4) and 0.45% (n=1) of the birds carried STEC and EPEC strains, respectively.
